Workshop “New insights into sulphur chemistry”

The workshop will be held 22nd to 24th of June 2022

Scientific rationale

Sulphur is the tenth most abundant element in the Universe and is known to play a significant role in biological systems. Indeed, along with hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus, sulphur is considered to be one of the six elements fundamental to life. However, while the carbon and oxygen budgets in star-forming regions have been extensively studied, there are still a lot of open questions about the sulphur chemistry, and in particular about the relative distribution of sulphur between gas and solids in the insterstellar medium. One main problem is that our knowledge of the sulphur chemistry is still poor, and therefor the predictive power of chemical models is limited. A coordinated effort of theoreticians, experimentalists and observers is necessary to improve our chemical models in order to obtain reliable predictions that allow us to constrain the sulphur elemental abundance in different environments.

The goal of this workshop is to join theoreticians, experimentalists and observers that are currently working on sulphur chemistry, in order to share information, discuss and take new initiatives to progress in our understanding of the sulphur chemistry. It is a three days workshop (22-24 June) and the preliminary program is the following.
