Workshop “New insights into sulphur chemistry”

Scientific rationale

Sulphur is the tenth most abundant element in the Universe and is known to play a significant role in biological systems. Indeed, along with hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus, sulphur is considered to be one of the six elements fundamental to life. However, while the carbon and oxygen budgets in star-forming regions have been extensively studied, there are still a lot of open questions about the sulphur chemistry, and in particular about the relative distribution of sulphur between gas and solids in the insterstellar medium. One main problem is that our knowledge of the sulphur chemistry is still poor, and therefor the predictive power of chemical models is limited. A coordinated effort of theoreticians, experimentalists and observers is necessary to improve our chemical models in order to obtain reliable predictions that allow us to constrain the sulphur elemental abundance in different environments.

The goal of this workshop is to join theoreticians, experimentalists and observers that are currently working on sulphur chemistry, in order to share information, discuss and take new initiatives to progress in our understanding of the sulphur chemistry. It is a three days workshop (22-24 June) and the preliminary program is the following.

Preliminary program

1st day. It will be dedicated to the new improvements in the sulphur chemical network ( ab initio calculations, laboratory experiments,..). Confirmed speakers: Octavio Roncero, Guillermo Muñoz-Caro, Albert Rimola, Francois Dulieu, Valentine Wakelam, Valerio Lattanzi.

2nd day. It will be dedicated to the Solar System and protoplanetary disks. Confirmed speakers: Josep María Trigo, María Luisa Lara, Diego Turrini, Dominique Bockelee-Morvan, Romane Le Gal, Pablo Riviere-Marichalar

3rd day. It will be dedicated to observations of sulphur-bearing molecules in molecular clouds. Confirmed speakers: Javier Rodríguez-Goicoechea, Gisela Esplugues, Silvia Spezzano, David Navarro-Almaida

Registration

Contributed talks are welcome. For registration, send an e-mail to sulphur-wokshop@oan.es. If you wish to give a contributed talk, please attached a pdf with the abstract. The deadline for registration and abstract submission is June, 1st.

Venue

The workshop will be held in Real Observatorio de Madrid , which is located close to the city center with easy access in public transportation. It is ten minutes walk from the Atocha train station or underground. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Real+Observatorio+de+Madrid/@40.4084348,-3.6898032,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0xd422626c750e993:0xf6bfe84e4b2ec05a!8m2!3d40.4084348!4d-3.6876145
